What is Ortho-K?
Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is a safe, nonsurgical treatment designed to correct common refractive errors like nearsightedness and astigmatism. Also called night lenses or overnight vision correction, these innovative lenses make gentle corrections to your vision while you wear them overnight.
How does Ortho-K work?
The cornea is the dome-shaped window at the front of your eye. It takes in and shapes the light that hits the back of your eye, enabling you to focus and see. In the same way that a warped window distorts your view of the world, a misshapen cornea creates vision issues.
Using rigid, custom-fitted, gas-permeable lenses, Ortho-K reshapes the surface of your eye while you sleep. They gently flatten the cornea, allowing light to focus properly on the retina. When you wake up, you take out the lenses and go about your day as usual.
Are Ortho-K lenses safe?
The lenses are crafted from a high-oxygen, breathable material to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable. They’re very safe to wear as long as you follow your provider’s instructions on proper usage and hygiene practices.
What are the benefits of Ortho-K?
Wearing Ortho-K can slow myopia progression in children, reducing the risk of serious issues later in life.
They’re also ideal for adults who:
- Want an alternative to wearing glasses or contacts every day
- Participate in outdoor activities or sports
- Find standard contacts uncomfortable
- Aren’t a good candidate for laser eye surgery
In addition to clearer vision, some individuals also notice improvements in peripheral vision. The effects of Ortho-K aren’t permanent, but you can easily maintain the benefits by wearing your lenses for eight hours overnight.
What can I expect from wearing Ortho-K lenses?
Once you have your Ortho-K lenses, your vision will likely improve within a week or two. You may still notice glare around lights or some blurriness.
After a month, you should have more stable and clearer vision, with only minor issues like halos when you look at strong lights. Schedule regular follow-ups with your provider, particularly at the one-, three-, and six-month marks.
If you’re looking for a proactive way to protect your child’s vision or are ready to ditch the daily lenses, Ortho-K might be the nonsurgical, hassle-free solution you’ve been searching for. To talk to the Eyes on Second experts about Ortho-K, schedule a consultation or call the office today.
